Baptism is a precious gift through which we participate in the life of Christ and walk as children of light. It is the first sacrament of communion with the Body of Christ represented in a profound way by the parish.
Baptism of Infants
Since the beginning of Christianity, the Church has baptized children as well as adults. St. Paul baptized his jailer and the man's entire household: "Then he and all his family were baptized at once" (Acts 16:33). See also Acts 16:14-15 and 1 Corinthians 1:16.
But children are to be baptized only if there is a reasonable belief that they will be brought up in the faith. In our parish, we prepare parents for this role through Baptism preparation classes. We also provide wonderful opportunities for ongoing faith formation for both parents and children through our Religious Education programs.
A Note from our Baptism Coordinator: The Importance of Community
Recently, I attended a writer’s conference in Portland, sponsored by Oregon Christian Writers. I decided to attend for several reasons; namely, to learn more about the craft of writing, receive encouragement for the writing journey, and to connect on an emotional and spiritual level with other writers. The conference reinforced the importance of community, not only in writing, but community with other believers as well.
My husband and I moved to Bandon five years ago and have been very blessed to be a part of the community of believers here at Holy Trinity. Here, we find others who strengthen and encourage us in our faith journey, and we help others as well. God did not design our faith journey to be done solo. We all need community, just as the early church gained strength and encouragement from one another in their church community.
