Sacristan at Work

Margaret Carver is the sacristan for Holy Trinity Parish.  A sacristan is the person in charge of the sacristy and church related ceremonial equipment.  She undertakes the overall preparation of liturgical celebrations including all that is needed for special occasions.  In addition, a sacristan is responsible that there is a supply of fresh hosts and of duly authorized wine, sufficient clean purificators, corporals, and hand towels.  In general, the sacristan is the first person to arrive and the last person to leave.  She will unlock the church, turn on the lights, prepare the vessels and altar for Mass, clean up, extinguish the lights and lock the doors.

Margaret assembles the vessels, make preparations for Mass and places the vessels on the Credence Table.

Replacing the Sanctuary candle, checking the tabernacle to make sure there are enough hosts, placing the book of gospels on the altar, and arranging items for the presentation of the gifts are all part of the duties of the sacristan.

Other duties include:  preparation for any special celebrations such as Baptism; refilling altar candles; making sure the sound system is functioning properly; rinsing purificators into the Sacrarium and laundering all sacramental cloths used during Mass
