Meeting Minutes of January 22, 2014

The meeting was held at St. John’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 22nd and was called to order at approximately 9:45am by Chair, Sarah Thurow, after everyone had helped themselves to a delicious potluck brunch following the Wednesday morning Mass.

Present were: Sarah Thurow, Chair; Carol Hart, Vice Chair; Helene Harrington-Collins & Gary Dietel, Co-chairs of the Finance Committee; Sherry Johnson, Secretary; Father Rodel de Mesa, Parish Priest; Lynda Dietel, Nancy O’Donnell, Millie Hass, Eric Johnson, Priscilla Lang, Rolando Rodriguez, Marvin & Sharon Zuber, Rosie & Jim Hajek, Todd Cook, and Don Squire.

Opening Prayer: Grace was lead by Father Rodel.

Minutes: The minutes of the meeting of November 20th, 2013 were accepted as presented.

Reports:

  1. Budget & Finance: Helene handed out a balance sheet (see attached copy on church bulletin board). She said things were “looking good” comparing this month to last year. We have over $4000 in our checking account. She mentioned that the maintenance man had found the church clock that had been missing…it was found shattered on the floor below where it had been hanging and he threw out the pieces……therefore we need a new clock.
  2. Maintenance: Marvin said that he and Gary had cleaned the eves of the church and have cleaned up the stray brush. Gary is working on the timers and wants to make an “operation manual” for the church for the future. Nancy asked people to let her know of anything that needs attention and she will have Bob take a look at it.
  3. Women’s Guild/ Altar Society: Carol said they have $6900 in the treasury. They have purchased a new vacuum cleaner for the church.
  4. Outreach: Sherry said the Salvation Army Bell Ringing fundraiser before Christmas brought in over $1500. Rolando said the caroling on the day before Christmas went very well and that the new manager at Ray’s sent out coffee and donuts for all those participating. The packing of Shoe Boxes with Christmas presents before Christmas resulted in 20 boxes being prepared by St. John’s Church. Our Open Hearth Dinner is scheduled for April 1st and Carol and Mary Jane will be working on organizing it.  Our travelers packages have been assembled by Nancy and are ready to be given out to needy people traveling through town.
  5. Publicity: Sherry said she had printed and distributed about 45 St. John’s Phone & Photo directories in January and will be printing more soon. Holy Trinity has also created their own phone directory with photos of their members, similar to ours.
  6. Liturgy: Rolando said he has no religious training going on right now. Father has an adult educational video with 10 episodes that is available and very good. A discussion followed and it was suggested that the videos be shown one at a time after Wednesday masses.

Rolando said the church needs more servers, since Lisa & Charles are not participating, only Cheryl and Gary Wickham are serving on the altar during Sunday Masses. Rolando asked anyone who is interested to contact him.

  1. Music: Lynda said she had gotten together with Holy Trinity to pick out new music for the choir for Lent. She said the choir is doing well and it has good participation at Saturday choir practice.
